What is boiler pressure?

Boiler pressure, my friend, is the magical force that determines the hot water’s journey through your system. Picture this: your boiler takes cold water and transforms it into toasty goodness, pumping it through pipes and radiators to warm your home and hot taps. But here’s the thing, to make sure that this hot water reaches every nook and cranny of your humble abode, maintaining the right level of pressure is absolutely crucial. You see, if your boiler pressure skyrockets, it means there’s an excess of water in the system, causing it to throw a fit and shut down. No one wants that. So, to combat this pressure overload, one nifty trick is to bleed your radiators and let out some steam. On the flip side, if your boiler pressure is too low, it could mean there’s a sneaky leak somewhere in the system, causing water loss and, you guessed it, pressure loss too. Sneaky, indeed.

Now, keep in mind that boiler pressure is a bit of a wild card. It’s like a rollercoaster, fluctuating as your central heating does its thing and heats up the water. But fear not, for it should return to a more stable level once the heating is switched off and the water cools down. Typically, a normal boiler pressure would be chillin’ between 1 and 2 bars. You can spot this on your boiler’s pressure dial or a fancy digital screen. It might spike up to 2.5 bars when the central heating is blasting or when hot water is in demand, but don’t fret, it’ll cool back down to that sweet spot of 1-2 bars. Now, if it goes beyond these limits, either too high or too low, Houston, we’ve got a problem with your boiler pressure. Time to call in the experts.

Can a boiler lose pressure without a leak?

Although a leak is the most common reason for a boiler to lose pressure, there are a few other possible causes. For instance, if you recently bled your radiators, you may have let out too much air, resulting in lower pressure in your central heating system. But don’t worry, this can be easily fixed by adding more water through the filling loop until the pressure returns to normal.

In addition to leaks and air escape, there could also be faulty components inside your boiler. A malfunctioning pressure relief valve, for example, could be causing the pressure loss. Alternatively, if your boiler is old and worn out, it may simply be time for a replacement.

So, if you’re experiencing pressure issues with your boiler, check for leaks, consider any recent radiator bleeding, and inspect the condition of your boiler’s components. By addressing these factors, you can ensure your boiler operates at its best and maintains the desired pressure level.

How do I check if my boiler pressure is low?

The easiest way to determine if your boiler pressure is low is by finding the pressure gauge on your boiler. For modern boilers, like combi boilers, you’ll typically see a round dial on the front of the boiler or control panel. Older boilers may have their gauges located underneath or among the pipework. Ideally, your pressure gauge should indicate a reading of 1-2 bars, with the optimal pressure marked in green and red to indicate if it’s too low or too high. Some boilers even have a digital screen that displays the number of bars and an error code if the pressure is not within the normal range.

Fault Codes that Indicate a Boiler Losing Pressure

If your boiler has a digital display indicating the bar level it will show you fault codes if there is a problem present in the system, including if there is low pressure detected. These are a great way to help diagnose the issue before it becomes a big problem. These fault codes will vary with each make and model of boiler. It’s always a good idea to refer to your boiler’s manual if a fault code is present as each make and model of boiler will have different meanings for different fault codes. There are the most common fault codes for the top UK boiler manufacturers that show a drop in boiler pressure:

  • Worcester bosch – 1017 W
  • Alpha – E10
  • Biasi – ER04
  • Ariston – 108
  • Baxi – E119
  • Ideal – F1
  • Vaillant – F22

Comprehensive Reporting To Assist Your Insurance Claim

We totally get that you might be worried about the cost of detecting and fixing a leak. But here’s the good news: your home insurance policy usually covers the expenses of locating and exposing the leak. You’ll only have to worry about the minor repair costs once your insurance claims are settled.

The section in your policy that deals with this is typically called “Trace & Access” or something similar. If you have this included, your home insurance company should reimburse us for our services. And to make your life even easier, we’ll provide you with a detailed report that you can use when filing your insurance claims.

Why do we only recommend our services if your boiler is losing all its pressure in 24 hours or less?

If your boiler takes longer than 24 hours to lose pressure, it’s possible that the leak is too small to locate. Let’s break it down for you. On a 12 radiator system, if your boiler loses all its pressure in a 24-hour period, it means it’s losing approximately 500ml each time the pressure drops from 1.5 bar to zero.

Now, if we divide that 500ml over a 24-hour period, we find that the leak rate is about 20.83ml per hour. And if we further break it down into minutes, the leak rate comes out to be around 0.347ml per minute! This leak is incredibly small, like a tiny weep.

To give you some perspective, a droplet of water is about 0.5ml, so we’re talking about less than one droplet of water being lost per minute. That’s how small this leak is. But even at this rate, we should still be able to find it (assuming your floors are solid). However, if your floors are suspended, the boiler needs to lose all its pressure twice in a 24-hour period, or once every 12 hours, for us to effectively locate the leak.

We ask all these questions not because we don’t want to help you, but because we want to be honest and upfront. Unlike our competitors, we don’t want to waste your time and money on an impossible task. If we don’t think the leak is significant enough to be found, we’d rather let you know before charging you for a full day’s work. Our goal is to help you save your money!
